Are you pregnant and currently getting pain through your low back, pelvic, buttocks or pubic bone area?

You may have pelvic girdle pain. This is caused by increased movement and pressure through your pelvic joints. This happens due to postural changes, your baby’s weight gain as well as hormonal changes which increase the mobility of these joints.

Pain often occurs with single leg activities, such as putting on your pants, walking, going up and down stairs, getting up after sitting down and even rolling over in bed. Pain can range from a mild discomfort to a sharp pain, some women even describe grinding or locking of these joints. There may also be some heat and swelling in the area where the pain is coming from.

There are a few things you can do to help manage your pain such as:

  • Sit down when putting on pants, socks and shoes

  • Roll over in bed with your knees together before sitting up on the side of the bed

  • Take regular breaks and break down activities – instead of cleaning the house all in one go, go room by room with breaks in-between

  • Sleeping with a pillow between your legs
